Sniffing as a hacker point of view.

Sniffing is a art of monitoring data that is flowing in a network and a sniffer is a program or a device that monitor data travelling over a network.sniffer can be used for legitamate activities ex network management or illegitimate activities ex stealing info found on the network.
How a sniffer works?
There are 2 basic types of ethernet enviroment 1^st shared ethernet 2^nd switched ethernet
In the art of hacking switched ethernet network switch maintains the mac address of all the computer in network .switched etherent is more secure than shared etherent ,but sniffing can be done in switched network as well .
The two kind of technique are ARP spoffing and MAC flodding
MAC flodding –switches keep a mac table for routing the data to the correct destination,these information are stored in the memory of the switch but the memory of the switch is limited .MAC flodding use this limitation to bombard fake mac address until the switch comes to a fail open mode .Once the switch comes into a fail open state then it starts broacasting the packet to all port connectiong to the switch
There are two type of sniffing technique
1)Passive      2)active
Passive sniffing means sniffing done through the hub
It is difficult to be detected ,attactker simpily connect the laptop to the hub and starts sniffing working example of sniffing is shared ehternet hub
Active sniffing –Means sniffing through switched network,attacker tries to possion switch by sending bogus mac address .
It is very difficult to sniff
